Andy Murray’s comeback against Janko Tipsarevic in the first round of the Stella Artois Championships was halted by rain on day two at the Queen’s Club. The Scottish teenager was on the verge of levelling the match at one set apiece when the first rainfall of the 2006 Championships dampened his efforts.
Despite two attempts to withdraw the covers and restart play, matches were officially called off for the day shortly after 6.30 p.m.
It means Murray will resume on Centre Court on Wednesday trailing Tipsarevic 6-7(3), 5-2, with the Serbian one point away from holding his serve.
Earlier in the day, World No. 7 James Blake made a winning start to his grass court campaign after defeating fellow American Justin Gimelstob 7-5, 6-1, while his doubles partner Mardy Fish set up a mouthwatering second round clash with top seed and French Open champion Rafael Nadal after overcoming British wild card Jamie Baker 6-1, 6-3.
Robby Ginepri was the third American to win on Tuesday, coming back from a set down against countryman Paul Goldstein to win 3-6, 7-5, 6-1. Ginepri will now meet the winner of the match between Murray and Tipsarevic.
Dmitry Tursunov, Nicolas Mahut and Paradorn Srichaphan were the only other winners on Tuesday.
Matches will resume at The Queen’s Club on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m, with gates opening at 10:30 a.m.
