Canadian qualifier Frank Dancevic set up a second round clash with three-time defending champion Andy Roddick after coming back from a set down to defeat Danish veteran Kenneth Carlsen on the opening day of the Stella Artois Championships.
Dancevic, the 21-year-old who hadn’t won a match on the ATP circuit in 2006 before arriving at The Queen’s Club having played solely in Challengers, earned his chance against the two-time Wimbledon finalist Roddick with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Carlsen.
Meanwhile, Romanian veteran Razvan Sabau claimed just his second ATP win of the season after defeating Robin Vik to set up a meeting with No. 2 seed Ivan Ljubicic. Sabau, a semifinalist at the Surbiton Challenger on grass last week, came through 6-3, 6-3 against Vik.
Elsewhere on day one, Fernando Vicente earned a second round clash with three-time champion Lleyton Hewitt after overcoming Britain’s Martin Lee, while rising French teenager Gael Monfils claimed his first win at The Queen’s Club against Austrian left-hander Jurgen Melzer, the 19-year-old winning 7-6(2), 7-6(2).
