British Number One Andy Murray has been forced to withdraw from The Artois Championships because of a wrist injury sustained in Hamburg last month.

Murray, who won his first ATP-level match at the Artois Championships two years ago, was forced to admit defeat in his quest to be fit for the event which begins on Monday.

“I won’t be ready to play Queen’s unfortunately,” said Murray on his web site.“My wrist is getting better every day but it’s just too soon to play. I’ve been hitting balls softly and doing strengthening exercises for it, also been getting treatment every day and working out in the gym, so hopefully it will continue to improve.”

Tournament Director Ian Wight said: “This is hugely disappointing for Andy, the Tournament and the fans, but Andy’s health is the most important issue at this stage.

“He has a long career ahead and we are expecting great things from him. We look forward to welcoming back next year for the 30th Artois Championships.”
